Green mornings

I've taken to drinking green smoothies in the morning.

Now before you immediately stop reading because the thought of blending up vegetables and drinking them through a straw revolts you, hear me out.  I use a recipe from Kimberly Snyder's website, and it's pretty frickin delicious.  Tastes a whole lot more like banana than grass.

I started green-smoothie-ing last summer when I realized I didn't always feel great after eating breakfast.  I wanted something filling, easy to digest, healthy, and preferably dairy-free.  This smoothie was the answer!  And it fits right into my October Unprocessed endeavor.  I've made a few modifications to Kimberly's recipe, aka a little less lettuce and the addition of protein, which adds to the filling factor.  Here's what you'll need:

8oz Water
1 Romaine Heart
2 Handfuls Spinach leaves
3 Celery Stalks
1 Apple
1 Pear (I've used a few strawberries here instead)
1 Banana
Juice from 1/2 a Lemon
4 Tbs Ground Flaxseed
4 Tbs Green SuperFoods Protein Powder*
Blend water, romaine and spinach until smooth.**  And in celery and blend until smooth.  Add in apple and pear and blend until smooth.  (Catching on yet?)  Add banana and lemon juice and...all together now...blend until smooth.  Add flax and SuperFoods powder and blend until smooth.

This makes enough for two BIG servings.  Extra can be stored in the fridge until the next day or put it in the freezer for a few days and then allow to thaw overnight in the fridge.  You may have to stir it up after removing from fridge as the juices separate.

*My friend Justin's company makes this SuperFoods powder.  All natural, chock full of a crazy amount of vitamins and minerals, and you can buy it with or without protein (whey protein).  Check it out.  Justin's strong enough to drink it straight with just water.  I have to mask the green flavor by putting it in smoothies.

**This "until smooth" is verrrrry important.  You will not like the smoothie if it's chunky, so hopefully you have a pretty high powered, awesome blender.  Try a food processor instead if you don't have a blender.

Sushi!


Birthdays at the office equal free lunch for everyone!  Today our lunch came from Sugarfish in the form of giant platters of sushi.  It only took 15 of us about 20 minutes to devour the 8 platters that came our way.  Hello food coma.

I'm happy to say this meal fully fits into my attempt at October Unprocessed (the dessert, however, definitely did not).  Edamame aka steamed soy beans?  Check.  Seaweed?  Check.  Rice?  Whole grain check.  Raw fish?  Check.  Cucumber?  Check.


I had to avoid a couple of the offerings, namely the spicy tuna roll (tends to include mayonnaise, which, while it can be made of unprocessed ingredients, most likely in it's commercial form is not), and the soy sauce (you'd be hard pressed to find a preservative-free soy sauce).  If you're sushi-ing at a restaurant, it's pretty easy to modify orders to make sure sauces and mayo don't hurt your chances of eating all-natural, unprocessed foods, so just sit at the bar, ask the chef what he's using, and enjoy the show!

Chocolate Reeses Frisbees


Look at that, see why I called it a frisbee?  These guys are big and flat like a frisbee, but sweet and slightly crispy unlike a frisbee, unless someone has started manufacturing sugar-coated frisbees.

So I was shopping.  And I bought giant chocolate chips.  And Reeses Peanut Butter Chips.  And then I combined em into a cookie dough that spread out more than I've ever seen a cookie dough spread in the oven but still turned out absofreakinlutely delicioso.  Or so it would appear since all 30 of the giant cookies were devoured by the 10 people watching football at my apartment on Saturday.  I've modified the ingredients a bit here so the spreading shouldn't be quite so severe in your attempt.

Here's what you'll need:

October Unprocessed

As linked in my previous post, over at the Eating Rules blog there's a little challenge by Andrew Wilder to not eat any processed foods during the month of October.

I'm gonna do it.  But in order to do it, I definitely am going to need to chronicle the attempt (and my failures) so get ready to read all about it.

Success 1: Bacon Chard Fusilli.  Andrew posted this recipe and I jumped right on it.  I modified it a bit, because I didn't want to buy raw milk, nor do I drink/eat much dairy anyway, and it still turned out delicious.

Failure 1: Chocolate Fudge Frosting.  Got an order for a cake today and I just can't resist licking the beaters once I whip up a fresh batch of frosting.  Ok yes I did make it from scratch, so it's not as bad as taking a spoonful out of a can of high fructose corn syrup, but still it's not unprocessed, because chocolate and sugar are both processed.  And this frosting uses a lot of chocolate and sugar.

Here's a taste of both the success and the failure:
